Coach's Corner

RVYSA and PVYSL endorse good coaching conduct and ethics.  Since coaches are viewed as role-models for our youth, it is important that all volunteer coaches present themselves as good citizens and act appropriately.

Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. Course

S.A.F.E.T.Y. - Sports Awareness For Educating Today's Youth

Founded in 1983, the Youth Sports Research Council (YSRC) is a continuing education division of the Department of Exercise Science and Sport Studies at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The YSRC develops and disseminates information about the influence of organized sports on the physical and psychological development of children and adolescents.  A 3-hour clinic is presented to provide safety training for volunteer coaches. Volunteer coaches who successfully complete the clinic are granted partial civil immunity protection from potential lawsuits and their attendance is permanently recorded by the New Jersey Recreation and Park Association (NJRPA).

The objectives are:

1.) help coaches minimize the risk of injury to young athletes;
2.) provide information about fundamental coaching concepts; and
3.) protect volunteer coaches from civil lawsuits.

All volunteer coaches must be certified by taking the Rutgers Safety Course. If you would like to volunteer and have not taken this course, please contact your League Director or email us.  Classes are scheduled from time to time in River Vale and Hillsdale  Additional classes will be held at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood each month. For further information, please call Valley Hospital at 1-800-VALLEY1.

This is probably the most confusing rule in soccer.  We found a great video that explains it all.  Check it out here.
